Spicebush (Lindera Benzoin) is a native Appalachian shrub that flowers early and beautifully in spring, grows well and green throughout the year in moist shady areas and produces green berries that turn a vibrant red as the ripen in late summer/fall. Many thrushes and songbirds adore the berries Spicebush and it even has its own beautiful butterfly species, Spicebush Swallowtail (and other butterflies and pollinators love their nectar). All parts of the Spicebush are great as delicious (and traditionally medicinal/stimulating) tea and dried, ground, and used as a seasoning.

Our seeds are collected and prepared (berry pulp removal) as the berries reach peak ripeness to maximize viability and arrive in moist sand from the creek on our farm. They must either be kept refrigerated until spring and then planted or directly planted this fall to allow for cold stratification.
