Black Hawthorn Seeds (Crataegus douglasii)- native hawthorn with blue-black berries. Seeds may take up to 18 months to germinate. Cold stratification may improve success rate. Seed packs contain 25 seeds.

Commonly called Mayflower. Black Hawthorns grow approximately 20-45 Feet tall. They grow along forest edges, in open areas, and along creeks or rivers. They can tolerate dry sites. With deep spreading roots, these are great for restoration areas to hold soil in place and resist erosion.

Blooms May-June with fruit from mid July through August. Berries can be eaten fresh or dried.

Natives used the 3cm long thorns for fishhooks, rake tines, or small lances. The hardwood can be used for handles of tools or weapons.

Create a hedge with Black Hawthorns and watch many birds come in for the berries, wildlife will live under the thicket, and create a impermeable wall where privacy is needed.

Hello, we are Redding Forager's Association. The goal here is to make wild foods and medicines more available to people who have a hard time accessing these products while simultaneously having a positive impact on the local ecosystems where we harvest them. We do this by having conservative harvest procedures and by giving back more than we take. A large portion of our time is dedicated towards propagating native plants to be planted in areas in need of restoration- especially those areas devastated by wildfires.

Your orders on this store go 100% towards supporting these local restoration efforts in Northern California.
