this boneset was harvested in a sunny field on our property. it is mostly flower with some leaves and stem. i tinctured it fresh on a dry summer day and left it to steep for several months. boneset flowers have the most beautiful scent that i’ve ever encountered.

the leaves of boneset are unique in that they are fully fused together at the stem. it looks like one symmetrical leaf with a stem poked through. the leaves have no stem at all. this is part of boneset doctrine of signatures. it is a remedy that brings bones back together properly. native americans used it heavily for this purpose. i have read some miraculous case studies where complicated fractures came back together nicely, almost as if an inherent magnetism was reestablished within the bones themselves. i think integrated medicine is king. i would use a few drops of boneset a day after having a complicated fracture set and casted. i also often hear of people who have trouble with old injuries where there was a complicated fracture. i’d take a couple drops of boneset or teasel with the joint support tincture. i consult for free for your safety, success and benefit. so please don’t feel like you need to figure it out on your own. you can message me any time.

boneset is best used as a low dose remedy. i’d take a 1-3 drop dose twice a day or up to a 5 drop dose once a day. it has deep actions and it takes the body a little while to get down into the inner workings of those deep spaces. it’s not unsafe at larger doses but can be uncomfortable. stiff doses (like WAY more than 5 drops) can cause vomiting. this is not because it is poisonous or unsafe, but because it has deep actions and strong influences on the autonomic nervous system that runs through the digestive tract.

in the past when people were run down and weak from long illnesses (very commonly from malaria or influenza) they used remedies like boneset to help the body ‘find its feet’ when the body was unable to check difficult pathogens and after struggling for too long, there were wires starting to get crossed. the strong chills, shivering and fever from these kinds of pathogens can really derail the autonomic nervous system, especially in how it innervates the guts.

there’s a lot of historical gnosis on a number of remedies that were used for this purpose and they don’t all have the same properties. it’s important to note that boneset has very specific uses in bone related issues. it’s nice to talk about its overall actions through gnosis of how it was used for influenza/malaria patients because bone pain was a very common issue. there is newer research suggesting that malaria may lead to bone weakness long term.

boneset is specific for bone pain and has shown deep actions in bone setting and healing. in cases of influenza/malaria we see people getting strong fevers, chills alternating with sweats and shaking. it’s not uncommon to have bone pain. strong fevers that cause bouts of chills alternating with sweating are very hard on the body. we’re always looking to push a fever through to release it as opposed to repressing it. we help the body to do what it’s already trying to do, respecting its innate wisdom for how to heal itself.

boneset opens the pores (diaphoresis) and sends a strong shiver through the autonomic nervous system to help a system under attack remember itself. this is a common action for bitter remedies. they’re grounding and bring us back to the present moment. this is why it’s important to experience the taste of remedies, even if you don’t enjoy them. the taste is the beginning of the herbal actions. once the body experiences that shiver, the pores should start to open. we need a strong sweat to release the fever fully. this is a pivotal moment towards recovery. it’s an event that triggers other body/immune responses that work to reestablish normalcy. any illness that leads to bone pain is a pathogen that has been allowed to reach deep places. it’s very important to include remedies like boneset or teasel to address the fact that this level of self has been reached and to offer balance and protection.

i believe that reestablishing and reenforcing nourishment, protection and innervation of the bones is an important part of the recovery process for deep pathogens and trauma recovery. i have not found much on this scientifically or even in terms of any type of holistic medicine. this is just personal gnosis. but i have seen women with PTSD become anemic over and over again. i started to associate the common symptom of ‘dissociation’ with the anemia. it seemed like they weren’t tied into themselves properly and i started to wonder if deeper connections had been lost or compromised through experiencing trauma.

one of the only ties into this idea that i’ve read about is matthew wood talking about using teasel for lyme recovery. teasel is another serious bone remedy for serious injuries to bone/muscle/sinew/nervous system. it is neuroprotective and neuroregenerative when used appropriately, but it is not antimicrobial and i don’t think people realize that.

as i continued to contemplate this idea, i started to notice that people who have have had serious illnesses or experiences tend to develop anemia, osteoporosis, bone pain, fibromyalgia, migraines etc. disproportionately to people who have not had them. i think that we can have parts of our system go offline for a couple different reasons.

one source of trouble seems to be related to lacking nutrition and deep nutrition- a deficiency or lack of resources necessary to fuel deeper functions. food as medicine, bone broth and medicinal mushrooms need to be paired with nutritive tonics and nervines and other specifics here. it might not be easy to figure out on your own, but it can be done. things like acupuncture and massage can help expedite the recovery process but we really need to reestablish deeper nutritional reserves and it takes a little while.

other times i think we need to remember that trauma is not an emotional injury but an injury to the nervous system itself. when the system is stunned profoundly, the quality of ‘connection’ within the system at large is at risk. this is confounded by the fact that in PTSD and trauma recovery, chronic fight or flight mode is a big deal. on a physiological level, the system (body and mind) cannot function to its deepest and fullest potential in the sympathetic mode. it puts all of its resources into surviving the present moment. in the sympathetic mode it is not possible to digest fully and properly, to rest constructively. it reinforces the new survival mode where deeper functions are overlooked. the system’s innate self healing wisdom is turned off and crisis mode is on. it’s not fuel efficient. it’s not sustainable. we need deep constructive rest to create time for deeper healing. we need nervines and specifics to work out of this chemical cycle and to reestablish lost connections. harmonizing is really important here.

in short: it’s important to reestablish and strongly support correct action during and after jarring illnesses and experiences. we have a lot of deep body functions rooted in the bones. it’s a hub for neurological and immune functions. it’s where we make new blood. if a jarring illness or experience has reached the bone level, we need to support the space and make sure it’s fully online and has the nourishment and support it needs to stay that way. boneset is a great specific for this, especially when there is bone pain. teasel is another great consideration for troubles in these spaces. both are most comfortable at consistent low doses over an extended time.

i'd also like to note that there is a difference between deep bone pain and bone on bone pain. boneset is for the former. joint support tincture or st johnswort is better for the ladder.
