This beautifully fragrant Indiana Mugwort is sustainably foraged (as always) from a chemical-free environment. The leaves are only harvested prior to the flowering period, so quantities are limited. Once the leaves are rinsed and dried in small batches, they are hand-smashed (after washing them of course!) and coarse ground.

Scientific Name: Artemisia vulgaris

Description:

Mugwort is an upright rhizomatous herbaceous perennial which grows 2-4' (less frequently to 6') tall, and in the right environments can spread aggressively. Some states consider it to be an invasive species.

One of the most striking characteristics of mugwort is the silvery appearance of its lower leaf surface from tiny, densely-packed, wooly hairs. The leaves are arranged alternately on the stem and shallowly lobed closer to the ground but are deeply dissected and linear higher up with each lobe tapered to a point.

Uses:

For hundreds of years, Mugwort has been used for treating gynecological ailments and gastrointestinal diseases. Recently, researches have proved that this species has antioxidant, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, antispasmolytic, analgesic, estrogenic, cytotoxic, antibacterial, antifungal, hypotensive, and broncholytic effects.

Because Mugwort contains essential oil, this species is used as a culinary spice in the food industry in various regions of the world. Currently, this species is also increasingly used in the production of cosmetics in Europe as well as in Asia and North America.

Also known as Sailor's Tobacco, this can be smoked. Others burn it in smudge sticks or enjoy its pleasing aroma as an incense.
