i generally prefer to use elderberry for immune purposes 

but elder flower has many merits and is useful in specific situations. 

i mainly use it to release the periphery fevers. the flower more overtly opens the pores to induce diaphoresis. 

it's cooling, astringent and sweet. it works well in small doses. 

it's good for people with dry skin, especially if there is redness or a marbled appearance in cheeky areas. 

when it's constitutionally indicated, there may be a chronic 'closed' sense to tubes, and elimination pathways. 

the lungs, more specifically the bronchials, are often involved. 

there is sometimes a blue hue to the skin, often when there's a 'closed' sense.

sometimes i like to combine elder flower with agrimony for that bronchial tension,
