Manila Mango (Mangifera indica) is grown primarily in the state of Veracruz in Mexico. Thanks to the Manila galleon trade, it was brought to Acapulco in the seventeenth century from the Philippines. Its roots are in Philippine mangoes, just like those of other Mexican mango cultivars like Ataulfo. It is frequently mistaken for the Philippine variation Carabao because of similarities in shape, color, and flavor, but they are actually two different breeds since the Mexican Manila contains genetic input from other imported types, whereas the Carabao does not.
With approximately half of the production, the Manila mango variety is the most produced variety in Mexico. Even so, its commercialization is restricted to national borders; That is one of the reasons why the Ataulfo variety is the one that is sold the most to the US and other nations.
