Creating a Shiitake mushroom garden in your yard is a rewarding and straightforward process. To start, you will need 100 shiitake mycelium plugs, which are sufficient for inoculating 2-3 logs or stumps. These logs should be around 4 feet long and approximately 6 inches in diameter.
The mycelium plugs are wooden plugs infused with shiitake mycelium. To use them, drill 5/16 inch diameter holes into the logs or stumps and insert the plugs. After insertion, seal the holes with wax to protect the mycelium (wax is sold separately).
Once you have set up your logs, allow 7-10 days for the mycelium to fully colonize, depending on the strain and temperature. With proper care, your shiitake mushrooms will thrive for many years.
Indoor & Outdoor Mushroom Kits and Mushroom Plugs for mushroom gardens!
When I purchased my first mushroom kit in 1997 I was hooked! There wasn't much information about growing mushrooms at that time and the internet was just taking off. There was something about mushrooms growing to maturity in a matter of a few days that was very exciting to me.
Over the next 25 years I have grown countless varieties and learned many techniques that I would like to pass on to others before my time on earth is finished.
