i harvested this slippery elm from a tree in my woods in spring time.
it's made from freshly peeled bark and grain alcohol.
i made a cold decoction of some bark and leaves to get more experience with the remedy.
it is a general mucilage but has an obvious complexity to it. the tincture turned a deep blue-green within hours.
the tea and tincture has a mineral-esq taste and quality to it.

i know pretty much every herb book you can read will tell you not to bother
tincturing general mucilage remedies.
from experience i'll tell you that if you are seeking a general mucilage for its demulcent properties,
it would be ideal to make it as a tea.
the tea will thicken up, you drink it, it relines your insides. prompt results.
but we can bring out other facets of general mucilage remedies by tincturing them fresh in grain.
drying and heat are hard on the deeper, more complex constituents in plant medicines.
cold decoctions from fresh plants are a really special way to get the best of both worlds.
that's not terribly practical or available.
i like making fresh demulcent remedies into very strong tinctures.
grain alcohol is a must as vodka can't handle the fresh mucilage for more than a season before going flat.

slippery elm is not my first demulcent tincture.
i have Solomon's seal as the main ingredient of my best selling joint support tincture.
i have shatavari root (dried) in my divine feminine tincture.
i have marshmallow root on its own and in my UTI tincture.
low doses work really well. stiff doses are safe for short term use (~2 weeks is playing it really safe)
follow a demulcent tincture with a glass of water.
tinctures work through the waters of the body, so it's important to stay hydrated.
this is especially true for detox remedies and demulcent remedies.
you need water to clean house. you need water to activate the demulcent qualities.
too much demulcent can have the homeopathic effect of becoming over drying.
this tends to happen from long term stiff doses.
have you heard the old zen proverb 'once you've crossed the river, you don't need your boat anymore' ?
I've commonly heard that up to 6 weeks of tea at moderate dosing is appropriate. i think that's very reasonable.
matthew wood says in his monograph for slippery elm that women commonly took it
as a tea for the last two months of pregnancy for ease of delivery,
so there is considerable gnosis behind somewhat prolonged use.

i often tell people to take a stiffer dose for 1-2 weeks.
once you're seeing solid results, taper that dose back.
then continue to take lower, intermittent doses until you've been symptom free for 2 weeks.
give yourself some time and space to assimilate the newness. then reassess if you need further support.
at this point, it is very likely that it may not be from the same remedy.
i'm discussing this with you because people often grow attached to a remedy that was useful to them
and did a lot of good.
then when things are better but not perfect, they want to keep using that same remedy.
especially with marshmallow or slippery elm bark for gut issues or respiratory situations,
we let the mucilage do its job and that usually strongly clarifies and simplifies the situation.
maybe you need some black walnut hull or yellow dock to tone the guts.
maybe some rabbit tobacco would help release tension/spasm in the bronchioles
if you're really on the mend but still wheezy.
these are really common situations that come up.

i made this remedy specifically for people who have hot, irritated digestive systems and often have loose stools.
half a dropper of tincture a couple times a day, or more as needed, can help rein this in.
this is a really common situation that people find themselves in.
it seems especially for men. it's really not good for you to have such hot digestion.
it's not good to start getting considerable cracks down the middle of your tongue.
there can be a lot of different reasons for this presentation.
it often stems from general lifestyle, generally too rich or poor of a diet
or (very common) from having food sensitivities that you don't bother to eliminate.
but it can pop up for a number of reasons and i'm glad to hash that out with you.
this simple root issue can also turn into a lot of other issues.
leaky gut, acid reflux, bathroom problems, headaches, joint pain etc. 'general' inflammation is not good.
that heat breeds further heat and disorder. down the line, it can become corrosive.

we can use herbs to soothe inflammation from wherever the root source seems to be in your system.
the nice thing about general mucilage remedies is that they are cooling and damp by nature,
so they tend to be nice general remedies for starting to cool that heat down.
but they are more complex than that and they do have more focused affinities.
-Solomon's seal with support the gut,
but it's very specific to joints, spine and kidney spaces.
it supports male fertility.

-marshmallow root will support your lungs, but it's very specific to the gut,
female reproductive system and skin.
it's quietly very strongly acting on the skin and gives a deep clean from the inside out.
dr Christopher reports using it reliably and repeatedly for gangrene (internally and externally)

-shatavari root is fairly specific as a female support remedy. it acts on the female reproductive system.
it supports libido and personal lubrication. no doubt it would support the guts and bowels as well
when taken as a tea or at stiffer doses.

slippery elm seems to be a complex remedy, even just in taste and color.
it is reputed to be a strong 'general tonic' for convalescence.
i think it acts strongly on lungs and gut. i could feel the influences on joints and bones.
in the old books it has a strong reputation for skin/wounds/skin conditions.
i would use it somewheat extendedly as a tea or a light gruel to support someone who has been
substantially weakened by illness, injury, treatments etc.
to me, slippery elm seems like an excellent choice for stabilizing and recovering from something chronic or difficult. it has extensive gnosis on this.
it can help you get back on your feet after a bad shake.
it will clean your insides and it will clean your skin from the inside.

stay hydrated and take care to eat simple, nourishing food for best results.
this is the kind of remedy that will quietly show you that most of your back pain is coming from your gut heat.
it also seems to act more on the nervous system than the other demulcents. it has been repeatedly suggested that this is due to a high calcium and mineral content.

if having mucilage as a secondary property is fine for your situation, tincture is just fine.
if you are in need of the mucilage directly, please be aware that the tea and powder are commonly adulterated.
this is not a remedy to just pick the first bulk option that comes up.
choose a reputable supplier, even if it's a bit more expensive.

i think taking some high quality tea with a few drops of tincture
would really maximize slippery elm's full influence.

i have a large bag of excellent slippery elm bark for tea and will put it up for sale if you'd like to have tea and tincture together,
which would be wonderful.
i did not wild forage this bark myself, as i only harvest enough bark for tea when a tree or branch has fallen
at an appropriate time of year for harvest.

small bag- 1.5oz
enough for 2 weeks or so at 1-2c a day
large bag- 4oz
enough for 1-2 months at 1-2c a day

i consult for free for your safety and benefit. please reach out anytime if you have any questions at all!~
i realize that it can be overwhelming to find appropriate solutions on your own and i'm very glad to help.
