i dug these stone roots myself in fall of 2024
they are of excellent quality and stone root only grows in excellent soil.
i chopped up the live roots as best i could and long steeped them in grain alcohol
because as their name implies, the roots are impossibly hard.

this is a remedy that can be incredibly important
so we need the extraction process to be sufficient.
i often keep these roots in the highest proof grain alcohol all year due to how hard the roots are.
it may not be what most herb books consider typical preparation,
but as someone with experience i can tell you it makes a huge difference.

presentation really depends on a person's constitution
but there is constriction/congestion/incorrect tension in one place
that can cause consequences elsewhere.
sometimes venous congestion happens because of tension that is restrictive and sometimes it happens because of laxity
we need appropriate tension, not too tight not too loose, to allow the circulatory system to pump blood effectively.

stone root is a stimulating astringent, but like many astringents it seems to act more on correcting tension
rather than being purely drying + toning or 'tightening up'
i will say that as always, quality is incredibly important here for expecting excellent herbal actions
and dosage is equally important! dosage determines what the remedy is working on
consistent lower-moderate doses can bring change and tone to the overall cardiovascular system and tones the veins slowly over time in a lasting way.
a few days of stiff doses would be appropriate for getting hemorrhoids under control, then tapering off dose to a low-moderate to correct the underlying imbalance.
stiff doses tend to be more blatantly drying astringents. which is great if you're running to the bathroom but not helpful if we need to do subtle work elsewhere.

stone root is an important remedy for deep congestion and stagnation
in veins and lymph. this often manifests as 'pelvic congestion'
with varicose veins, palpable inflammation of nodes,
menstrual and reproductive issues in women (dark clotted blood, pain, different kinds of adhesions etc)
stone root is a specific for hemorrhoids and congested/obstructed feelings in the throat or rectum
there may be a lot of water weight, especially in the lower body.
from a holistic point of view, the kidneys may not be functioning as they should be (edema),
though there may be nothing clinically awry. very common.
there could be obstruction feelings in the lower body
but they could also be higher, in the liver or spleen.
(this is not beginner work to resolve, but it is possible with several moving parts)

the eclectics raved over stone root's utility for gall bladder stones for which it is said to be a great specific
this is a more comfortable remedy than others that i've seen for flushing gall stones
as a close relative to nettle, this is also used for kidney stones.
(at least meet it with a strong cup of slippery elm bark or marshmallow root for slippery support and stiffly dose some fresh lemon juice)

please note that there are 'natural regimens' on the internet for flushing stones that are not comfortable, safe or effective.
*it is always critically important to ask your doctor if any kind of stone in question is safe to pass*
i've had many clients over the years who sought me out after they were given a doctor's blessing to go home and pass kidney or gall stones.
yes there are solutions that can facilitate the situation safely and more comfortably once your doctor gives you the ok

one client told me ‘i wish i would have known that herbs can help you pass a kidney stone. my doctor broke them up and sent me home to pass them.
they were razor sharp and i had blood in my urine for a week afterwards’ even a few cups of very strong marshmallow root or slippery elm bark tea would have helped them enormously.
the mucilage lubricates and protects the ureter as the stone moves from kidneys>bladder.
if you need help- reach out! i won't get into the break down here of what you can use for what.

with stone root, there could be blood pressure issues and/or heart issues
this could be due to venous tension/laxity/congestion in the lower in the body
and or could be affecting the heart, liver (portal vein) in much the same way.
stone root is an absolute specific for respiratory conditions and irritations that are the result of heart issues
i have seldom seen such enthusiasm and assurance for this serious of an indication from old physicians
but stone root is a very safe herb from the mint family and i would love to see it be of service to those with heart and related respiratory conditions.

DOSE:
i've seen old literature suggesting that doses of 2-5 drops are excellent
and that in serious situations 10 drops was appropriate for short durations until they come around.
i've also seen old doctors that i really admire use up to a dropper full every hour or two in bad situations.
i would be so happy to help you with this. a quick conversation can make all the difference.

in my experience,
when i had stone root tincture made from dried roots, i liked 5 drop doses. it is more blatantly astringent.
now that i have stone root tincture from fresh roots, i love 10 drop doses. it’s not that it’s less strong, it’s just more well rounded.
i like the fresh tincture because you can taste that more medicinal constituents are present.
a strong inulin layer settles on the bottom of the fresh tincture, which really surprised me after years of only working with dried root.
i don’t worry too much about the fresh root tincture becoming excessively dry.

i like 10 drop doses for people who are actively symptomatic with something that bugs them.
you can repeat that dose a few times a day if things are actively imbalanced.
when they start to resolve, you can cut back to 5 drops doses a few times a day.
if that’s not enough to manage symptoms, 10 drop doses are safe and fine.
for something like rectal/hemorrhoid issues, you should notice fairly prompt change. within a few days at most.
you would do well to use something like a cup of strong slippery elm bark tea with your stone root (don’t use slippery elm powder go peek my description for it)
for deeper tension issues, you should notice a change in a week or two.

this usually manifests as a heart imbalance (sometimes clinical, sometimes not) and sometimes a BP issue- can be high or low.
we often, but not always, see some varicose veins here, discoloration in the legs (sometimes temporary indicating blood flow imbalance)
sometimes we see the veins very clearly, which is not necessarily indicative of a problem. it’s more so an indication that an astringent would be helpful.
that being said, i’ve seen POTS presentations where BP was low, iron was severely low and heart was out of rhythm (dr said it was a ‘safe’ arrhythmia)
and it responded nicely to 10 drop doses several times a day, over time needing less and then none while holding results.

as a general rule, consistent low-moderate doses act to tone deeper venous laxity and adjust tensions that benefit smoother blood flow.
this leads to supporting the heart itself. when blood flow is smooth and even, the heart muscles don’t have to work as hard.
stiff, consistent doses act differently and tends to act as a general astringent, drying things out, rather than tone + correct the vascular system.
not unsafe, but probably not what you’re looking for. it's important to use remedies well to get good results. more is not often 'more' in these scenarios.
these are the things that people gloss over and then think there aren’t meaningful solutions for their problems.
i just want to mention, that most of these indications are not beginner friendly herbal endeavors.
stone root is safe, but most of these kinds of issues need a few moving parts.

for example:
for rectal prolapse and hemorrhoids: stone root is very specific to this issue and works promptly.
but the prolapse and hemorrhoids are usually coming from a bowel imbalance that needs support.
regardless of whatever else is going on, i like a stiff cup of slippery elm bark tea (simmer 20 mins, steep for 12 hours before straining)
alongside the stone root tincture to promptly soothe and lubricate your insides.
from there, i often look to slippery elm bark (or sometimes marshmallow root), birch polypore, black walnut hull, yellow dock root to name just a few.
dose depends on what all is going on.

you can also develop rectal prolapse and hemorrhoids from a venous imbalance that ends up causing heart problems.
this often runs in families. varicose veins show that there is venous laxity in the lower body. this makes your heart work harder to get the blood back up to the heart.
they commonly get hemorrhoids as a symptom of venous laxity, not from a bowel issue, but they do get hemorrhoids or have a strong history of them.
then they have heart issues that are clinical and often regularly see a cardiologist.
you have to be careful of their heart meds here, if they take any, because you don’t want to interact.
lifestyle factors extra influence them, so take care to tone up lifestyle. but i like concentrate concentrate (hawthorn berry, nettle + seed and rosemary)
usually with some reishi and stone root here. we need structural support and readjustment.
this is often a constitutional imbalance (hereditary or a natural disposition towards this imbalance)
but you can start working on it before it’s a big problem and make a difference.

for example, i have a client in his 60’s who has this problem and is active with his cardiologist and active with his herbal regimen (we love responsible integrated medicine)
then their son, who is a young adult, also partakes in a very similar herbal regimen. he already had considerable varicose veins as a teen.
the family is very active and all natural. his heart disease is not from a lifestyle issue.
it’s my hope that by using herbs proactively, the son will have less pronounced presentation as they age.
there is evidence that lifestyle can change our DNA- for better or worse.
i hope that we can try to work this issue out of their DNA for their little future family members.
i think helping the body get what it needs in a very practical way is a great way to bring attention and solution oriented energy to the system’s attention.

a note on varicose veins:
i cannot promise that stone root will make them go away entirely. i would assume it would take 6 months or so to properly find out.
this seems to be a remedy that keeps working beyond the time it's used.
from what i understand, it could reduce some of the appearance, but the effects are mostly internal and practical rather than cosmetic.
i have heard that sage essential oil used externally can greatly reduce the appearance of varicose veins but have not had the occasion to see for myself. i would love some feedback or personal testimonials if you have any information. i also have sage EO in bulk if you'd like a small bottle.

i consult for free for your safety and benefit.
please feel free to reach out with questions or an outline of your situation and i would be happy to help!
i typically respond promptly. best~
