Creating a Turkey Tail mushroom garden in your yard is a straightforward and rewarding project. To start, you will need 100 Turkey Tail mycelium plugs, which are sufficient for inoculating 2-3 logs or stumps. These mushrooms thrive on various hardwoods, including Oak, Alder, Poplar, Aspen, Elm, Ironwood, and Eucalyptus, as well as some fruit trees and Douglas fir.

To grow Turkey Tail mushrooms, drill 5/16 inch diameter holes into the selected logs or stumps and insert the mycelium plugs. After insertion, seal the holes with wax to protect the mycelium from contamination (wax is sold separately).

Turkey Tail mushrooms are known for their health benefits, particularly due to compounds like Polysaccharide-K (PSK) and polysaccharopeptide (PSP). Research indicates that PSK may assist in treating certain types of cancer and is approved in Japan as a supplementary treatment alongside standard cancer therapies. Additionally, studies suggest that mushrooms can positively impact the immune system and may help combat infections due to the presence of glutamic acid, an amino acid found in mushrooms.

Once you receive your mycelium plugs, allow 7-10 days for them to fully colonize, depending on your room temperature. With proper care, your Turkey Tail mushroom garden can produce mushrooms for many years.

Indoor & Outdoor Mushroom Kits and Mushroom Plugs for mushroom gardens!

When I purchased my first mushroom kit in 1997 I was hooked! There wasn't much information about growing mushrooms at that time and the internet was just taking off. There was something about mushrooms growing to maturity in a matter of a few days that was very exciting to me.

Over the next 25 years I have grown countless varieties and learned many techniques that I would like to pass on to others before my time on earth is finished. Take a look at our mushroom kits and plugs here on Foraged. If you are interested in cultures, growing equipment and workshops please visit MushroomMan.com.
