Turmeric can be grown indoors. If planted outside, the roots loosen soil. All parts of the plant are edible. Turmeric roots are used both fresh and boiled/powdered in cooking and dyeing clothing. Turmeric is commonly used in curries and tastes like earthy black pepper.

Your turmeric rhizomes can be split if you wish to propagate more plants. You'll just need at least one "eye" on each section that you plant. Let your turmeric dry just a bit if you split them further (they are wet on the inside). You can plant them under about 2-3" of rich, well-draining soil with the eyes facing up. Water them and keep them moist, but not soggy. They like to be under a little shade, but will take partial sun. Turmeric rhizomes require decent amounts of watering and/or rainfall. Turmeric also prefers temperatures between 68 and 82 degrees F. Collect rhizomes seasonally for propagation.
